It just wouldn't be me to not try to ride in this snow. So, now, I can say that I did (sort of). I most certainly burned a bunch of calories trying to stay on the bike. I even tried to let some air out of the tires, but in the deeper stuff (what icebike.com calls road snow and chocolate mousse*) I just didn't have aggressive enough lugging to maintain traction.

Oh well. Tomorrow will be better.

Re: You know I had to try

How deep was it on average? I saw that someone had a Cannondale Scapel up on Federal Hill this afternoon. Clearly hadn't ridden it the whole way as it was way too deep up there. In the streets that were plowed but they are few over here right now.

^^^^^^^
It was still about 3-6 inches of road snow trampled over by vehicles and made soft by the salt.

I'm going to try again today, soon, since the roads may be firm now that the temps have dropped into the low 20s F.

Re: You know I had to try

No-go.  Did a grocery run at 10:30am on the bike and Mace Avenue is still coated with soft slush (road snow).

There are more cars on the road, so it's more stressful out there than yesterday, at least in my immediate neighborhood.

Re: You know I had to try

I saw someone on a mtn. bike on Fort Ave this morning when I was out. He was making good progress in the slush and there weren't too many cars out yet though it was only one lane. Spent all day shoveling so I'll have to wait until tomorrow to venture out. At least over here I don't think too many people are going to be going anywhere. Still way too much snow.
